NRU’s Nitrogen Recovery System is a patent-pending technology that extracts nitrogen from wastewater as a valuable ammonium solution.
The process passes wastewater through a specialty membrane stack that concentrates ammonium into a liquid product. The membranes work by selectively separating ammonium using an electric field.
We estimate that this technology can recover 25% of the nitrogen in a facility with one pass, and can recover more with multiple passes. A pilot unit was constructed in 2016 and will begin trials in 2017.
